A girl was taken to Green Lane Hospital with bruises and shock after a coal range exploded in a house at 2 Korau road, Epsom, about 5.20 p.m. today. She was Mrs Shirley Taylor, aged 16.
Mrs Taylor, and her husband. Robert Taylor, aged 19. her sister Lois, aged 12. and her mother, Mrs D. J Neale were at tea at Mrs Neale's home when the explosion occurred. A piece of metal, six inches by four, missed Lois, by inches and buried itself in the wall. The room was showered with flying soot. Mrs Taylor was treated at hospital and later discharged. The explosion shifted the heavy coal range off its foundation.
The lounge fireplace at the back of the range was cracked.
Flying metal punched holes in the ceiling of the living room. Fragments of steel and soot covered the walls, furniture and refrigerator.
Sergeant M. R. Mildon said he did not know the cause of the explosion. An explosives expert would be called to investigate the matter tomorrow.
