Cold Weather Halts Flights Of Aphides
\’O aphid flights had been detected during the period between June 26 and the end of July at Lincoln, Palmerston North and Marton, the aphid and virus committee said in a further report issued this week. Aphid trapping has been resumed in all cropping districts in New Zealand to study the spring flight of aphides.
The spring aphid flight was not important for autumnsown wheat crops, the committee said, but was of prime importance for all
spring-sown crops. I Examination of autumnIsown wheat crops in Canterbury had shown a high level of aphid infestation in April-sown crops. Wheat crops sown in the first two weeks of May had all shown aphid infestation, but no aphides had been found in crops sown after May 15. This confirmed the expected rei suits based on the autumn aphid flights and substantiated the wheat spraying advice given in June. (All wheat crops sown before midI May should be sprayed at any convenient time between now and mid-September». The cold weather during the last two months had not killed the aphid infestations. i but had stopped ahpid flights ! and prevented infestation of ! crops sown after mid-May.
The aphid and virus committee will meet fortnightly from August 15 and issue spraying recommendations for cereal crops in all districts.
