CENTENARY OF CHURCH
Synagogue Services
The Christchurch Synagogue service at sunset last evening ushered in the Jewish Sabbath and began a week-end of celebrations for the centenary of the foundation of the Jewish congregation in Christchurch. The Rev. J. Wolman led the service, which was attended by Rabbi A. Astor who has come from Auckland to attend the celebrations.
A service conducted by the youth of the congregation will be held this morning, and the main centenary service on Sunday afternoon will be attended by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., who will represent the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer), the acting Mayor (Cr. H. P. Smith), and the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. W. A. Pyatt).
A noticeable feature in the Synagogue is a new screen before the Ark, which has been completed for the centenary. The decorations on it are from a screen which was saved from a Synagogue in Czechoslovakia and brought to New Zealand before World War n by Mrs E. Horn and Mrs V. Kardos. A centennial ball will be given tonight to welcome visitors to Christchurch, and a reception in the Jellicoe Hall, Gloucester street, will follow the Sunday service.
