AIRCRAFT CRASH

Chest Injuries To Pilot

(N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, Aug. 4.

The pilot of a top-dressing aircraft which crashed while making an emergency landing at Welcome Bay, Tauranga, on Saturday afternoon. was later admitted to the Tauranga Hospital with chest injuries. He is Roydon Harold Griffin, aged 38, married, of Pine avenue, Maungatapu. A paissenger in the aircraft, Geoffrey Lansdown, a loaderdriver, of Otumoetai, escaped with a severe shaking.

The aircraft was returning to the Tauranga aerodrome from Whakatane where Messrs Griffin and Lansdown had been working. It is understood the machine’s speed dropped suddenly and that the pilot, unable to increase power, attempted to make an emergency landing in a paddock. The plane smashed through a fence, slipped down a gully and across a stream, then crashed nose first into a bank on the other side.

The injured pilot was still in the cockpit. The aircraft, owned by Adastra, Ltd., of Mount Maunganui, was extensively damaged.
