ATTEMPTED TO ESCAPE
Couple Shot Bv Guards w (NZ Press Assn—Copyright) FRANKFURT. August 2. East German border guards shot dead a man and wounded a woman yesterday as they tried to flee to Went Germany. Horrified tourist* shouted “Murder" as the East Germans killed the man with bursts of sub-machine-gun fire at a range of only Ml, eye-witnesses said. Tile incident occurred near the West German resort of Hohegeis, in the Harz Mountains.
Hundreds of West German and foreign tourists aaw the man and woman running across a field towards the border fence. They had reached the “death-zone" ploughed strip when a burst of sub-machine-gun Are sent the woman sprawling. Although hit, the man reached the fence. "Then he just seemed to run out of strength. ’’ an eye-witness said. "The People's Police ran up and shot him at point-blank range.”
The East Germans brought 25 guards and an ’ armoured car to the border.
