BUILDING NAMED AFTER PRINCIPAL

“One of the most pleasing things 1 have heard, since I became responsible for child welfare. is the name given to this new house and the way in which it was named,” said the Minister of Child Welfare (Mr McKay) when opening a new technical arts unit and a new accommodation house at the Girls' Training Centre, Burwood, on Saturday.

The house has been named Scottford, incorporating part of the principal’s maiden name, Scotter, with Ford, her married name. “It was so named because

of a request by the girls here.” he said. "This is a mark of the affection in which the girls hold their principal.” It was also a recognition of the contribution that Mrs Kathleen Ford had made to the development of the centre. But more important, it Showed that she had the respect and the confidence, as well as the affection, of the girls among whom she worked, the Minister said. “It is sometimes hard,

when one is responsible for discipline as well as training, to be efficient and popular. But Mrs Ford has ably contributed both of these qualities and I would like to pay a tribute to her work here at Burwood,” said Mr McKay. The superintendent of the Child Welfare Division (Mr C. E. Peak) said that Mrs Ford had established a reputation in New Zealand and in overseas countries as an expert in the management of this type of institution.
