CARELESS RIDING

H. N. Rauhihi Fined £lO

H. N. Rauhihi, the rider of Cretan in the Jumpers' Flat at Riccarton on Saturday, was fined £lO for careless riding. Rauhihi was charged with careless riding and jostling Peterzami (J. H. Hely), After hearing evidence from Hely and the stipendiary steward (Mr D. V. Spicer), the Canterbury Jockey Club’s judicial committee found that Rauhihi had not taken sufficient steps to keep his mount straight. After the preliminary for the Cashmere Plate, M. J. Wildermoth. the rider of Golden Thistle, was instructed to remove the hood from his mount. The hood had slipped and was likely to impair the horse’s forward vision.

W. P. Hogan, the trainer, was later charged with not correctly placing the hood on the horse’s head. After hearing the evidence and Hogan’s admission and explanation, the committee found Hogan guilty of carelessness and issued a severe reprimand. J. R. Dowding, the rider of Palisade in the Paparua Handicap, was charged with causing interference to The Wanderer (B. J. Anderton) and Approval (W. T. Day) about three-quarters of a furlong after the start. After hearing evidence from the stipendiary stewards and the riders concerned, and a statement from Dowding, the committee found the evidence was conflicting. The charge was dismissed.

Magonza lost his rider, N. T. Cowdes, at the hurdle in front of the stand in the Trial Hurdles. Magonza carried on with the field, only to fall at the hurdle five furlongs from home.

Cowdes was examined by the club's doctor. Although not seriously injured, he was not allowed to ride again during the day. Golden Dreamer fell at the fence by the three furlongs in the Grand National. Golden Dreamer had earlier hit the second of the stand double. He injured his cannon bone and required stitches. Blue Rock broke down and pulled up lame after going only three furlongs in the Grand National. In the Enfield Steeplechase. Packwood (N. T. Cowles) broke down in his near foreleg and pulled up after jumping the last fence.
