Aug. 4 Twenty-four-year-old Jack Rule gained a seven-stroke lead yesterday in the St Paul open golf tournament with a seven-under-scratch 65 United PressInternational reported. On Friday he scored a record 11-under-scratch 61. Rule, of lowa, took the thirdround lead in the 35.000 dollar tournament with a 54-hole total of 193. His seven-stoke lead over Fred Hawkins, of Texas, who also came in with 65. equalled the year's best third round margin on the Professional Golfers' Association circuit. Two Australians. Bruce Devlin and Bruce Crampton, shared third place with Tommy Jacobs, of California. Rule, seeking his first professional victory, had seven birdies yesterday, increasing his birdie output for 54 holes to 22. He had an eagle on Thursday and has had only two oneover scores in the three rounds. Devlin shot a 66. Crampton 68 and Jacobs 67 for third place at 205

The PGA. record for 54 holes is 189 set by Chandler Harper in the Texas open in 1954.
