B. J. Langford made 14 attempts to win a Grand National Steeplechase before tie finally made the grade an No Offence on Saturday. And he might have thought Saturday was going to be just another unrewarding day w hen he took a tumb'e in the first race, the Enfield Steeplechase

Langford rode Oneroa. which came down at the second fence in the Enfield, but the luck changed for last season's top jumping rider in the Trial Hurdles, which he won easily on Kindling, a stablemate of No Offence and Oneroa.

Kindling ended a run of •accesses by outsiders with his easy win in the Trial Hurdles.

This was Kindling’s fourth win in the last year, and it followed a sound placed run behind Mireusonta at the Wellington winter meeting. Kindling is a strong High Forest gelding owned by Mr A. E. Preston and trained at Otaki by B. A. V. Preston. The North Island put two

runners into the field for the Trial Hurdles, and they were the first two home. The best of Kindling's rivals was the Waverley-owned and trained Tension.

He could not put the winner to the test, but was four lengths better than the third horse. Regal Order, which just saved third from Rifleman, which came from the back after a bad jump in the middle stages at the race. Magonza hit bard at the second flight and bumped N Cowles to the ground. Oneroa's fall in the Enfield Steeples left the race to the South Islanders, and Mainroyal, ridden by his Washdyke trainer. B. T Jones, won at double-figure odds from Delwood and Sea Buoy. Sea Buoy went out to a fairly wide lead early, and Mainroyal chased him in a gap clear of the others. Then Delwood made a sharp run forward to lead into the last five furlongs He held his lead to the last fence but was outstayed by MamroyaL
