Three New “Caps”

Seven Canterbury players and four from Otago form the bulk of the South Island Rugby team to play North at Christchurch next Saturday, but seven of the 11 South Island unions are represented in the squad announced in Dunedin on Saturday. The selectors (Messrs N. J. McPhail, D. H. Hamilton and V. L. George) have retained seven forwards who were in South’s pack last season. The only newcomer in the pack is the North Otago

lock, L. Barber, who replaces R. S. Abel, the former Canterbury lock who is now in Hawke’s Bay and who played for South last season. Two new “caps” are included in the backs: the young Otago centre, I. S. T. Smith, and the Canterbury player, D. A. Arnold, at second five-eighths. Arnold has been preferred to two second five-eighths who played for New Zealand last year, R. C. Moreton (Canterbury) and W. A. Davies (Otago). Moreton is an emergency but Davies has been omitted altogether. The team is:

Full-back: W. F. McCormick (Canterbury). Wings: J. G. Allison (Southland), P. J. Morrissey (Otago). Centre: I. S. T. Smith (Otago). Five-eighths: D. A. Arnold (Canterbury), B. A. Watt (Canterbury). Half-back: C. R. Laidlaw (Otago). Back row: D. P. Kennedy (South Canterbury). Side row: D. J. Graham (Canterbury), K. A. Nelson (Otago). Locks: L. Barber (North Otago), A. J. Stewart (Canterbury). Front row: J. M. Le Lievre (Canterbury), D. Young (Canterbury), J. B. Shaw (Buller).

Emergencies: K McGregor (North Otago). R. C. Moreton (Canterbury). J. N. Creighton (Canterbury), T. E. Rogers (West Coast).

The North Island team, announced in Auckland on Saturday. is:—

Full-back: D. B. Clarke (Waikato). Three-quarters: M. J. Dick (Auckland). I. R. Macrae (Hawke’s Bay), R. W. Caulton (Wellington).
