ROUGH SEAS IN NORTH

Two Trawlers Buffeted (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 4. Two of Wellington’s fishing trawler captains agreed today that they had experienced more bad weather this winter than in any other year since they started off as deckhands together in 1937.

Captain J. Cardno, skipper of the Maimai, and Captain J. Campbell, skipper of the Thomas Currell, arrived back on Friday night from what they described as one of the worst trips they could remember. With two or three other trawlers from the Wellington fleet, they had been in the Castlepeint area since leaving port on Sunday night They caught very few fish. Captain Cardno indicated handrails which had been loosened when huge waves flooded over the Maimai’s bows and swamped the for’ard deck.

Captain Campbell said that heavy seas had come right over the stern of the Thomas Currell.

The Norwegian Parliament has been asked to authorise a 264-channel submarine telephone cable between Norway and Britain to be ready by 1966.
