Persuasion

Battle for the Mind. By Wiliam Sargent, Pan Books. 226 pp.

This account of the physiology of brainwashing and conversion is now in its fourth printing in ya qjieap edition. It was not an accurate account of its topic when published six years ago and the passage of time has only empasised its remoteness from the main body of literature dealing with the problems of conformity and persuasion. The object of Sargent’s book is to show how politicians, priests. psychiatrists and policemen can forcibly implant beliefs in the human mind regardless of their value and accuracy and whether they run contrary to beliefs previously held. It is all very interesting and all very misleading. While knowledge of physiology and psychology has not given modern inquisitors the powers claimed, their chances of success will be greatly enhanced if they can persuade their prospective victims to read this book.
