Foundation Gains
A aet gain of £456 was made •by ’jhe Canterbury Medical Research Foundation from the charity film pemiere of “PTlC9'' s>t the Regent Theatre last week. the secretary of the foundation’s appeal committee (Mr R. S. Newton) said yesterday. The premiere had helped, moreover, in more ways than by the direct financial benefit, as adthtrional goodwill had been created and more persons had come to know of the work >f the foundation. One man bed told an executive member that he had changed his will in favour of the foundation after reading a newspaper article on its work. Road Warning A warning about the posable condition of the read his week-end on the hairpin bend at the bottom of the hill on the Kowai aide of Porter’s Past on Highway 73 was given yesterday by Mrs P Acourt. of Christohurch Last Sunday we saw five cars skid on this bend in five minutes because of ice on the road, and only good driving prevented a succession of nasty accidents.” said Mrs Acourt. ‘The trouble is that drivers usually accelerate at •his point to gain momentum for the climb. Last Sunday nv husband, who is a policemen, got out and directed traffic for a while, but of course there will not always be someone there Perhaps I can save an accident by telling The Press' about the danger ” Prescription Costs The average cost of medical prescriptions on social security paid by the Christchurch pricing office of the Health Department in July was nearly 4|d above that for June, but about 4d below that for July last year. In July. 1963. the average cost was 10s 0.4 compared with 9s 8d in June and 10s 4.17 d in July, 1962. The number of prescriptions paid during the month was 277.799, at a total cost of £139.419 14s 7d The number received for payment was 263.348, compared with 223.737 in June and 249.413 in July last year. Old Coins A penny dated 1797 was brought to “The Press” office yesterday by Mr W Banks, of Matsons mad, Christchurch. It is larger and much thicker than the present penny and is in good condition Mr Banks has a halfpenny dated 1775 He brought the coins back from England in 1918 Mrs F. J Anniss. of Pages mad. has a farthing dared 1754 A resident of Templeton has an 1807 penny.
