CIVIL-DEFENCE HANDBOOK
All Households To Get Copy
Householders throughout New Zealand will soon receive a booklet entitled “Householders’ Handbook For Emergencies." which the Ministry of Civil Defence is issuing to enlist the support of citizens and to create an understanding of civil defence.
In a foreword, the Minister of Civil Defence (Sir Leon Gotz) says the purpose of the book is to help citizens to be self-reliant in emergencies To ensure that the suggestions will be easily understood the contents have been kept short and simple The booklet gives instructions on what to do in the event of earthquake, fire or flood, and there is a section on first aid which includes artificial respiration and treatment of all kinds of casualties.
The effect of a neclear explosion is dealt with, and advice is given on how to reduce the effects of fall-out radiation. Steps to take if
an evacuation is necessary are also given. The booklet is printed in red and black with simple diagrams to illustrate the text A hole is punched in me corner to allow the book to be hung in a prominent place.
