Parliamentarians Choose Delegates To Conferences

WELLINGTON. August 1. Members of Parliament today elected the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) as leader of the New Zealand delegation of three members to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s annual meeting in Kuala Lumpur in Octoter The Dominion’s branch of the association, which consists of all members of Parliament w-'ll take its turn this year to nominate Mr Tennent for the vice-presidency of the association for 1964 It is usual for the vice-president to assume the office of president in the next year
The association, to which members of legislatures in all commonwealth countries belong, will have its annual meeting m New Zealand in 1965 Mr W. J Scott (Rodney) will be the Government's delegate a<t the meeting Opposition me.abers have still to choose a delegate
Members also met today as the New Zealand branch of the International Parliamentary Union They elected Mr A McCread" (Government Otaki) and Mr W A Hudson (Onposition. Mornington) as their delegates to the annual meeting of the union in Belgrade in September The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association endeavours to promote understanding and co-operation among the parliaments of the Commonwealth exchanges information of common Interest and encourages co-operation with the legislatures of countries with close historical or parliamentary links with the Commonwealth ne IPU has similar objects of co-operation on a world-wide basis About 60 countries in both the East and West belong to the union An official announcement on the CPA. delegation is expected to be made when all three members have been chosen
