SETTLEMENT SCHEME
Small Hope For Establishment (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 31. Small hope for the establishment of a farm settlement sdiesne in Inangahua county is held by the Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard). In reply to a question by Mr P. Blanchfield (Opposition, Westland) in Parliament today, Mr Gerard said any development scheme must depend on enough suitable properties being offered to the Crown to build up a block of sufficient size to warrant the department undertaking a project He said no offers ot land were in sight Mr Blanchfield had asked whether, in view of the recent report by the Cabinet committee, there might be scope for the establishment of a farm settlement scheme in the area. He asked whether the Lands Department’s activities in the Reefton and Inangahua districts could be expanded. “The question of the feasibility of establishing a farm settlement in the ReeftonInangahua area has been fully investigated,” Mr Gerard said. ‘There is no substantial area of Crown land available that is suitable for development, and the only scope for the activities of the department would be by purchase of privately owned undeveloped or uneconomic properties.”
