BENTONITE DRILLING
Deposit Being Proved
Canterbury Mineral Mines. Ltd., has started drilling to prove the bentonite deposit on the company’s concession at Coalgate. The drilling is being carried out by the Welldrilling and Exploration Company of Christchurch. “We are so fair only about 10ft into the deposit, but we hope to go right through the seam.” thme governing director of the mining company (Mr R. C. Dunn) said yesterday. “Possibly 100 ft would see us to the base,” he added. When work was finished on this bore, others would be put down as necessary to chart the seam, which appeared to be of considerable magnitude. It dipped sharply beneath the Canterbury Plains.
Reactions from New Zealand foundries which had tried the bentonite were good, and many which had started with odd bags had come back for half-ton lots, said Mr Dunn. A sample of Coalgate bentonite activated for oil-drilling and other purposes had received a good report from Australia, and a company representative was crossing the Tasman next month to discuss the prospects of the material. The activation had been carried out in conjunction with the Nelson Lime and Marble Company. Ltd., of Mapua. The Mines Department and Geological Survey were also assisting his company in various ways, Mr Dunn added.
