Pit Stop
The Lotus-Fords which competed at Indianapolis are to be entered for at least two more races in the United States, and will be driven again by D. Gurney and J. Clark. The Indianapolis engines are to be modified by the fitting of special twin o.h.c. heads. ★ A three-hour saloon car race for cars under 850 c.c. held in Britain recently was won by a Saab, with a B.M.W. 700 second and another Saab third. An Austin Mini came fourth. The team award was won by a team of Mini-Minors. ★ A team of Ford Falcon VB’s are to be entered by the factory in the British International Rally run by the R.A.C. later this year. ★ The Canterbury Car Club’s Thursday night rally on July 18 was won by C, G. Finney-C. W. Dorn (Jaguar) with J 5 Butts-W. Clapham second and E. R. Parkinsops-N. G. Harding (Morris Traveller) third. Fourth place went to R. Garlick-Miss D. Odell (Austin A 35) and fifth to W. A. Ankhor-M. J. Crose (Ford). There were 34 entrants and two cars retired. The 48-mile course was mainly around the suburbs.
When the winning cars J in the six-hour interna- • tional saloon car race were 5 inspected by the scrutin- ! eers after the race the * winning Jaguar was found { to be fitted with bigger- { than-standard inlet valves. { Consequently the car was * disqualified and the win- j ning Jaguar is now the { car of R. Salvador! and ' the New Zealander D. } Huhne. The Ford Cor- J tina which took fourth J place now moves up to j third. The Jaguar which 5 originally won was fitted ' with a non-standard head ' before being bought by { the present owner, M. Sal- } mon. The head would have » been no advantage dur- » ing the race, and Salmon i and his co-driver, P. Sut- i cliffe were completely un- « aware the car was not $ standard. A Mercedes { 220 SE which came second ; in its class was disquali- } fled for non-standard gear » ratios, which were also » fitted accidentally. Second ! place in this class now { goes to a Ford Zodiac. { ★ The inter-club rallies J for the year have now fin- } ished, and as this was the } first year of the inter-club ; competitions there will j probably be discussions on ! what is to be done next { year. The length of rallies } is certain to be discussed J and many would like to J see inter-club events kept j under about five hours j „ and 150 miles. Certainly ' } the standard will have to { Jbe kept high and the J } events will have to be J j kept interesting to attract » ! entries. Entries this year J ' in inter-club rallies have ' 5 been very poor indeed, { { particularly when the J } number of clubs in the ; j Canterbury area is con- * ! sidered. Some clubs have 5 { not . been represented at ? } all,gt some rallies.
