Woman On Doping Conspiracy Charge

BRIGHTON (England). July 23 A 26-yrer-old Swiss brunette was remanded in custody for a week by a Brighton Court today on a charge of conspiring to dope racehorees.
Bail was refused to Miss Micheline Smitten ne Lugeon. of no fixed address, after Chief Inspector Ernest Barnett. of New Scotland Yard eaid it was feared she would leave the country if released. She pleaded not guiltv ■when she wm charged with conspu-mg with six men who were committed for trial at nearby Lewes Assizes on July 12. after a 15-dav magisterial hearing at which 114 vctneeaea were called.
Asked if she had anything to say, Mtsa Lugeon. a beauty expert, said: "I am innocent and know nothing about it.” Chief Inspector Barnett Md the Magistrate that Mias Lugeon, who had been Bouagit since May 27, was ferreted yesterday in London, and to Brighton to be charged. chairman erf the magistrates granted a t'obce requeri that she be remanded in custody for one Week.
Miss Lugeon was charged with conspiring with the six men sent for trial, “and others.” between January 1. 1953. and August 9, 1962, in various parts of Britain “to cheat and defraud owners and trainers of racehorses, bookmakers (and the betting public* by means of the administration of drugs to racehorses to affect the performance of such horses when running in races.”
