FIRE CHIEF “IMPORTS”

Uust. Unionist’s Reaction (N.Z. Press Associction) WELLINGTON. July 24. He had been amazed at the number of "imported” chief officers in New Zealand fire brigades, a visiting fraternal delegate to the conference of the Fire Brigadesmen's Federation said in Wellington to<.day. Mr W. M. Webber, who for 15 years has been president of the United Fire Fighters' Union of Australia, and secretary of the Victorian branch of the union in Melbourne, said: "The New Zealand brigades could well look to recruiting their chief fire officers from their own ranks, rather than relying on importations. ‘"lbis situation must be most frustrating to the men in the ranks. "I can’t imagine this situation occurring in Australia. There would be a scream. The fellows over there just ■wouldn’t co-operate with them.”
