UNIVERSITY STAFFING

Problems In S. Africa (N.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) JOHANNESBURG. July 22. Many university lecturers who left South Africa two years ago because of the political situation and settled in Commonwealth countries are anxious to return, it was reported today. The University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Natal said they had received a number of applications for lectureships from South Africans now living in New Zealand, Australia, and Britain.

‘The majority of applications are from people living in New Zealand and Australia. where the universities seem to have smaller grants than South African universities, and accommodation is a big problem,” said a spokesman at the University of Witwatersrand.

In January last year, universities in South Africa faced a serious staff shortage because of the high number of resignations. Vacancies advertised in overseas newspapers attracted few replies and educationists warned that something had to be done to combat the shortage of trained men. 'Things are different today.” the University of Witwatersrand spokesman said. “We are getting a large number of applications for each vacancy advertised—many from overseas—and there is no longer a serious staff shortage.”
