1000 More Staff In Public Service
irrom Out Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 24. The permanent staff of the Public Service increased in the 1961-62 financial year by more than 1000, says the annual report of the State Services Commission presented to Parliament today.
This increase took place in spite of the fact that staff of the Broadcasting Service was not included in the total because it had been established as an independent corporation
The report says total membership of the Public Service at April 1. 1962. was 39,255 compared with 38,211 at the same time in 1961. The commission says that as long as Government services have to be maintained at the existing level it can promise little in the way of spectacular reductions in staff and expense All it can do is to see that both are controlled. The commission says its immediate task is to implement the provisions of the State Services Act, 1962. and to ensure full and prompt consideration of the recommendations of the Royal Commission on State Services. "Much will be initiated quickly—for example, increas xi training and management advisory services, delegatio to departments, salary and wage policies, occupatic'a. classification and efficiency and economy inspection." says the report. ‘•Other matters may take longer to complete—for instance, the recommendations of the Royal Commission on major functional changes in the State services—but they will be moved along surely and persistently.” The commission says the higher number of pupils leaving school each year resulted in more and “better calibre” junior recruits being obtained. "Particularly pleasing was the higher proportion of boys ■with school certificate or better qualifications,” it says
