CAR IMPORT SCHEME
Action Against Abuses (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 24. The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) has written to motor-car franchise holders warning that if he discovers abuses of toe recentlyannounced scheme to increase car imports he will take action. At the same time, some of the motor firms have themselves asked for the imposition of a 12-month no-resale covenant on all new cars, in an effort to check abuses.
A car imported under a no. remittai re licence is subject to such a covenant for two years, but the bonus car which 'an be imported for every no-remittance licence issued is not subject to any covenant. It is believed that when the new import scheme was put before toe Cabinet. Mr Shelton advocated the imposition of a 12-month noresale covenant on all new cars, but the Cabinet did not agree. Dealers are now finding that some clients are seeking as a reward for offering the dealer their no-remittance business, toe right to buy. and immediately resell the bonus car.
