SMUGGLING CHARGE

Evidence On Car fN.Z'. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July gl. Prosecution evidence in a charge of smuggling a Daim-ler-Bena car concluded in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr J. A. Wicks, S.M. The prosecution alleged the accused, a retired man. who name was suppressed, did not own and personally use his car outside New Zealand for at least 12 months, as he declared to the Customs. Maurice Teasdale Leech, an administration officer in the Customs Department, said the man had admitted to him he had returned to New Zealand several times during the 12 months before his return with the car.

The accused had admitted his declaration was incorrect and said he had taken some tablets on the ship to kill pain and was confused at the time he signed it. Leech said that the landed price of the car in New Zealand was about £2700. At the conclusion of the prosecution evidence the Magistrate adjourned the hearing by consent until August 2.
