COLOMBO ST. TRAFFIC
“Congestion Will Not Continue”
An implication in the statement of the executive of the Tramway Union that the Christchurch City Council, in lifting the Colombo street parking restrictions, was going to allow the present congested conditions to continue was not correct, said Cr N. G. Pickering.
Proposals for the improvement of traffic flow in Colombo street, contained in a resolution which he had moved, had been referred to the traffic committee for consideration, Cr. Pickering said
It was interesting to know the local executive of the Tramway Union was interested in the Colombo street parking problem, and nobody could give a better appraisal of the difficulties than the bus drivers.
One of the proposals being considered by the traffic committee was that representatives of the City Council and the Transport Boafd meet to discuss the possibility of resiting bus stops and reviewing the time-tables, where Colombo street was concerned. In 105 minutes there were 124 buses in Colombo street This was between 4 pjn. and 5.45 pjn. “It is obvious something has to be done,” •aid Cr. Pickering. The Tramway Union’s offer to meet the traffic committee to discuss traffic problems was very" welcome. Cr. Pickering said. As a member of the committee he would urge that the views of the bus drivers be heard.
