Fourteen N.I. Horses Arrive This Morning

Fourteen horses are due from the north this morning and 10 of them will start their Riccarton campaigns at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday.

They include Sir Totara, Lombard, Baron’s Craig and Musketeer, rivals for the Homeby Steeplechase, Erewhon, the topweight in the Lawford Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, Red View, which is engaged in the Brabazon Handicap, Red Mania, a Camla Hack Handicap light-weight, and Flockhart. Cogent and Cowley, which will be rivals in the Kennels Hack Handicap.

Also on last night’s steamer express were Dusky Prince. Aquaba, Tilly Light, and Legatus.

This year Dusky Prince will have to attempt the Grand National Steeplechase course without the benefit of a race over the country. But this was not the programme originally mapped out for the Tauranga 'chaser by his trainer. N. M. Craig. •' Craig intended to run Dusky Prince in the Homeby Steeplechase as he has done in the three previous years. He posted a letter nominating Dusky Prince for the race but unintentionally addressed it to Auckland instead of Christchurch. The letter did not arrive at the office of the club until three days after entries for the meeting had closed.

Craig was shocked yesterday when he rang the club to find out why Dusky Prince had not been weighted for the Homeby Steeplechase and was told that the nomination had arrived too late.

Big Wingatui Team

Eight members of H. A. and H. T Anderton’s team are already at Riccarton. Their numbers will be strengthened later in the week when H. T. Anderton arrives from Wingatui with Port Lanyard. Ravelston and possibly McGregor. The horses which were brought north last Saturday evening by the stable horseman, R. O. Cairns, after racing at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting, were The Wanderer, Bayline. Captain Morgan, Myfllou, Chartlea Park, Sahib. Zetland Leigh and The Toff. H. A. Anderton, the senior member of the partnership, arrived at Riccarton yesterday to supervise the training of the team. Saturday's meeting at Washdyke was not a good

one for the Anderton stable. Not one of the eight runners the partnership saddled earned a stake but Captain Morgan showed that he will be a prospect for the Longbeach Hack Hurdles on Saturday when he made ground for a close fourth in the Hadlow Hack Hurdles. He had made a successful debut as a hurdler at Waimate the previous week.

Bayline. the Dunedin Steeplechase winner at his previous start, was the best behind Captain Morgan in the Hadlow Hurdles. He was definitely out-paced and was second last seven furlongs from home but his stamina enaoled him to plug on for fifth. Bayline will switch back to 'chasing in the Homeby Steeplechase this week. Outstanding Record The stable representatives in the Westenra Cup this week will be Chartlea Park and Sahib. If either is successful they will have improved an outstanding Anderton record in the race. H. A. Anderton saddled Gabriel’s Gully to win three successive contests for the Westenra Cup from 1956 to 1958 and Chief Cashier won the event in the two following years. Sahib was sixth, but well beaten, in the Pareora Steeples at Washdyke—his second race in a fresh campaign. But he kept fairly close to the lead till the last

half-mile, so could show improvement over the shorter distance at Riccarton. Chartlea Park had his first race since the spring on the flat last Saturday. As expected, he was out-paced. But the run could have been valuable as a conditioner for this week’s contest The other members of the Anderton team which will compete at the Christchurch Hunt meeting are Myfllou and Zetland Leigh. They will be rivals in the Kennels Hack Handicap. Hie Riccarton ’chaser Balance will carry the colours of Mr C. A Champion and Mrs A. J. Williams in the Lawford Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Riccarton on Saturday

The nine-year-old Count Rendered gelding is now being prepared by A. J. Williams. who also trains Cheroot for his wife and Mr Champion.

Balance has failed to make a return in his four races this season for his former Riccarton owner and trainer. R. E Johnstone. But last season he won the Roslyn Steeplechase at Wingatui in June and was placed in four of his other seven starts.
