Beefeaters On Strike

(K 2.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, July 21. A thousand years of history turned a page at the Tower of London today when the Tower’s colourful Beefeaters went on strike for the first time.

Not only that: Twenty of them doffed their bright uniforms of yeoman warders and, in everyday clothes, picketed the gates in protest against their masters—the Treasury. The 9000 visitors who usually throng the Tower on sunny Sundays had to go elsewhere. The Beefeaters were striking with other Civil Service Union museum staff over a claim by 900 members of the union for a 25s weekly pay increase and a cut in hours from 48 to 42. In London, Edinburgh and Cardiff, about 150,000 sightseers were turned away from 20 national museums and art galleries, said the “Daily Sketch.”
