Double Fling For Maramarua Cup

"The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND, July 19. The jumpers expected to be on hand are of such ordinary quality that nearly all the interest at the Maramarua Hunt races tomorrow will be in the handicap horses. Uncle Joe, Double Fling and County are three of the candidates for the Maramarua Hunt Cup. the main event, but the acceptors otherwise are either lacking in ability or are well out of form.

In the first leg of the T A B. double, the Ohinemuri Handicap, Gay Parade, Red Luca. Poet's Pride and Lord Oman are notable, and in the second leg. the Paeroa Handicap, Gauntlet. Don Filou and Young Ray are among the acceptors. Gay Parade holds the best credentials for the Ohinemuri Handicap. She beat all except Craddock and Lucky Lu over 10 furlongs at Matamata only last Wednesday and she was the runner-up over 11 furlongs at Avondale on June 29.

By the look of her when she lined up last time. Gay Parade is thriving on her regular racing and the training work in between.

Poet’s Pride is the top-weight with 9-7. He has to give Gay Parade 241 b and Anywhere, the second top-weight. 211 b. The question with Poet’s Pride Is whether he is capable of going a middle-distance as well as he does a sprint. As far as a mile Poet’s Pride is among the best. This time he will be going 103 furlongs. It will be his first middle-distance since the Rotorua Cup. 10 furlongs and 180 yards, last February. in which he finished unplaced. In the meantime Poet’s Pride has improved greatly in his short-distance form and there is a possibility that he might now be ready for the longer courses He is a four-year-old in great heart and well up to weight.

Red Luca shaped well enough when sixth behind Craddock and company on to be rated a chance and so did Captain Lancaster when galloping ait Takanini yesterday. Gauntlet (9-7) and Don Filou (8-11) are the class horses In the Paeroa Handicap They are also among the big list entered for Melbourne next spring so their form during the next few weeks will be very interesting. It will be a surprise, though, if either is sufficiently forward to win this time, even allowing the moderate quality of the opposition.

Both Gauntlet and Don Filou have been resting from racing since the autumn.

Young Ray on the other hand has been competing regularly through the winter and doing well. He has the pace to be near the front all the way.

If he is able to show slight improvement on his form last time out over the country at Avondale. Double Fling will be the hardest to beat in the Maramarua Hunt Cup. At top form be is a reliable jumper and a solid stayer.

Drying weather yesterday improved the ground which will, nevertheless, be very soft. Selections:
