The increasing dependence upon electricity for cooking is illustrated by the 1961 census statistics of household amenities. The details were released yesterday by the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker).

In 1966, 57 per cent, of households had electric stoves or ranges. By 1961 this had increased to almost 68 per cent.

Use of gas cockers declined frc«n 16 per cent, to 13 per cent, during the period. Coal, wood and coke ranges declined from 19 per cent, to .12 per cent.
