FIREMEN’S SAVE
Blaze Kept In One Room
(N Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON. July 18.
With flaming debris falling about them, Wellington firemen this morning confined to one room a blaze which gutted the social hall of the Wellington Returned Servicemen’s Association clubrooms in Victoria street. The fire broke out in the social hall, on the second floor of the three-storey building. Within minutes of the alarm, about 9 o'clock, flames were shooting through the partly glazed roof of the hall, which is at the back of the building. But in a superb /save, the fire was confined to one room. The social hall is a “write-off" and will have to be rebuilt, while the lounge bar beneath the hall has been seriously damaged by water which poured through the ceiling.
