Open Fires In
Most
Three-quarters of New Zealand homes are heated mainly by open fireplaces This information emerges from answers to a question, asked for the first time, in the 1961 census of population. Releasing details of the household amenities revealed in the census results yesterday. the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) says the answers to the question on the principal means used for heating dwellings were as follows:
Open fireplaces: 74.1 per cent.
i Space heaters: 9.8 per cent ' Electric fires: 9.4 per cent
