The Controller and AuditorGeneral presumably felt that the "unauthorised expenditure” item in the Estimates relating to an ex gratia payment of £llB6 did not call for special comment, the DeputyPrime Minister (Mr Marshall) •aid in Parliament today. Mr J. Mathison (Opposition, Avon) asked if this “unusual” expenditure for legal costs and damages in settlement of a libel action in which the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) was involved had been cleared by the AuditorGeneral. Mr Marshall also said that the Opposition had the choice under standing order* to initiate discussion on the subject.
