Handling Charges On Wool Cargoes

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. Shippers and consignees of wool and other non-refrigerated cargoes will be required to pay a proportion of wharf-handling charges at the Auckland, Whangarei and Opua ports from a date to be determined, but not before July 1 next year.

This decision was announced today by shipping lines associated with the Overseas Shipowners’ Committee.

They said in a statement that the purpose of the move was to correct an anomaly since shippers and consignees at all other ports in New Zealand contributed a proportion of wharf-handling charges. "To ensure that the lines concerned are in no better position financially as a result of correcting this anomaly, a New Zealandwide reduction in rates of freight on the cargoes affected will be applied as from the same date.” said the statement. “The reduction will equate in total the saving to shipowners at Auckland. “The appropriate wharf charges are already being paid by Shippers and consignees on all refrigerated cargoes.

"Rates of freight to and from the United Kingdom and other overseas ports served by the lines are the same for each commodity at all ports in New Zealand," says the statement

"However, while shippers and consignees at all ports other than Auckland. Whangarei and Opua pay a proportion of the charges incurred in handling cargo on the wharf, the situation up to now at these three ports is that the charges have been paid in the main by the shipowners out of the freight. "This has placed most shippers and consignees at these three ports at a distinct advantage over those at other ports and has led to strong representations from other ports.”
