OVERTIME BAN
Extension By Carpenters A ban on all overtime on building contracts in Wellington and Auckland being carried out by construction companies with other contracts in Christchurch has been announced by the secretary of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union (Mr F. W. Molifteux). Advice of the union's ban was received by its Canterbury branch yesterday. Companies affected include the Fletcher Construction Company, Ltd., J. Calder, Ltd., P. Graham and Son, Ltd., and Wilkins and Davies. Ltd. The union's ban is a sequel to the decision by the Canterbury Master Builders’ Association on Thursday to discontinue overtime on all Christchurch building contracts from next Monday night.
A spokesman for the association yesterday said that the local overtime ban imposed by the association would continue till further notice. The association, said the spokesman, intended to press tor a new award, when wages could be fixed in a constitutional manner.
A lunch-hour meeting of carpenters, held at the Addington racecourse grandstand job yesterday, unanimously adopted this resolution: “That we accept the employers’ decision to abolish overtime, as it is in line with the policy of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union and the New Zealand Federation of Labour in their campaign to obtain a decent living wage for a 40-hour week.”
The Canterbury Carpenters' Union is seeking an hourlywage of 8s 4d.
