LOCAL C.O.R.S.O. ACTIVITIES

Report To Annual Meeting The Christchurch, North Canterbury, and Mid-Canter-bury district of C.OJtS.O. shipped 584 bales of clothing and 228 cases of footwear to needy countries last year. These figures were given by the district organiser (Mr G. H. Coley) in his report at the annual meeing of the district committee. The day-by-day sorting and the weekly baling of the clothing, collected from householders in the city or delivered to the centre, were done by 25 women under the direction of Mrs C. Smith, the report said. They were assisted by several retired farmers who handled the press.' During the last 12 months 213 bales of clothing had been pressed, and Mr Kennedy had packed 102 cases of footwear and hospital materials. The 20 members of the sewing guild had made 1666 garments and 90 quilts, and knitted 1889 peggy squares during the year. More than £l5OO had been raised by school groups in the district The amounts of money given ranged from 16s from a small country school to £146 from a district high school. Many schools were planning to raise money in the third term. C.0.R.5.0. committees had been set up to organise activities in Ashburton, Cheviot, Leeston, Methven, and Rakaia this year. Sixty relief posts were active in North Canterbury, and in the last seven years some 1750 children had sent in almost 45,000 garments and 10,000 pairs of footwear for overseas use.

Clothing Drive The committee decided that the clothing drive this year would be held on September 21. The Headmasters’ Association has agreed to let the 60 primary and intermediate schools which have helped with the collection for the last nine years help again this year. Mr E. C. Munt, who had been chairman of the committee for six years, received a presentation from the committee. Officers elected were: chairman, Sir Francis Adams; vice-chairman, Messrs A. C. Taylor and S. R. Noonan; treasurer, Mr J. W. Huggins; executive, Mesdames G. M. Davis, P. Milne and P. Goldstone, Misses C. Johnstone, M. Titheridge and C. M. Ryan, and Mr P. A. Stocker,
