ARGENTINE WEEVIL

Tests Of New Insecticides (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 8. The Department of Agriculture is conducting tests with some of the new insecticides in an effort to find a really satisfactory measure to control the Argentine stem weevil, which is widespread in New Zealand. The Director-General of Agriculture, Mr D. N. R. Webb, said today that the weevil had been known to cause damage in wheait crops for about the last 30 years, but in the last sax years it had also been observed to be causing damage in pastures in both the North and South Islands. AU grasses were susceptible to attack, but same more than others. Adults of the weevil were present in pastures all the year round and were difficult to pick up wiith the naked eye because of their dull odour. They were also covered with soil particles and in the immature stages they were inacessible because they were protected by being enclosed within plant tissues. No saltisfaictory method of control was known ait present. said Mr Webb, and no doubt more than one method of preventing serious attacks would be necessary, including the use of resistant or tolerant plants and possibly insecticides.
