DESTROYED BY FIRE
Cinema And Restaurant (N.Z. Preu Association) WANGANUI, July 9. Mangaweka’s cinema and restaurant were completely destroyed yesterday by a Are which, at its height, also threatened adjoining buildings The proprietor of the Friendly Inn Restaurant (Mr C. R. Tucke) and his family, who lived on the premises escaped only minutes before flames reached their quarters. The fire had too strong a hold on the wooden building and no hope was held of its being saved by the time the Mangaweka Volunteer Ffre Brigade reached the scene soon after the alarm was given. The brigade, with the help of the Taihape and Hunterville Volunteer Brigades, concentrated -its efforts on saving the adjoining ■ buildings The loss of the theatre, which in the last 26 years, has missed only one of its regular Saturday night screenings, is a major set-back for the township. It is said there is no possibility of its being rebuilt.
