Record Entries In Bacon Competition
A record number of entries of a particularly high standard was exhibited in tlhe Canterbury District Pig Council’s annual Canter-bury-Westland bacon competition, held at the factory of the Kiwi Bacon Company, Ltd., at Bromley yesterday. The entries totalled 125, compared with 85 Last year. About half the entries were from the West Coast. Only 15 entries failed to qualify for a merit certificate.
The judges were Messrs E. Bell, R. S. Raines, and J. Graham. In his comment on the competition, Mr Graham said the entries were up to a very high standard and were from the best type of pig for the trade that had come forward. Haim development was extremely good.
Mr Graham said the carcases showed a desirable amount of lean meat in relation to the fat content. The length of the parcase was another outstanding
feature—again most desirable from the trade's point of view. An unusual feature of the competition was the cutting of the three best carcases at the first nib to give a better display of eye meait. Although done overseas it is the first time this has been done in New Zealand. Mr R. Olliver, a Taranaki pig farmer, gave an illustrated address on pig production overseas. He said the New Zealand pig industry was the only one in the world closely allied to the dairy industry. In other countries grain production went with the industry. In England there was more research going on in the pig industry than in any other branch of animal production. “We must eventually gain from the findings of that research,” Mr Olliver said. Results were:—
T. H. Green and Company, Ltd., Challenge Cup for best carcase: G. S. Dailey (Oxford). 90 points, 1: G. J. Banks (Coutts Island). 87. 2; J. B. Muir fWhataroa), 86J, 3.
