Hockey CHALLENGE SHIELD
Ten Entries Received Because the newly-formed Southern Minors association encompassed the Ashburton area, the New Zealand Hockey Association could not accept entries for the Challenge Shield tournament from both Ashburton and Southern Minors teams, it was decided at a meeting of the association last evening. "If Ashburton indicated It would withdraw its entry in favour of Southern Minors, we could favourably consider their participation in the tournament, on the condition that they can not hold the shield," said Mr A. D. Holland. Southern Minors were not recognised as an association, as they were not yet affiliated with the New Zealand Hockey Association. The Southern Minors association, which was formed last year, covers the Ashburton. South Canterbury. North Otago. Gore, and Southland areas. Entries were received from Canterbury, Whangarei. Otago, Hawke's Bay. Auckland. Wairarapa, 'Wellington. Wanganui, Southern Minors, and Ashburton for the Challenge Shield tournament to be held in Christchurch from September 10 to September 13. The tournament will be followed by the North versus South match in Timaru on September 14. Mr A. D. Holland was appointed manager of the New Zealand team for the second test against Australia at Hamilton on July 27.
