NEW BOXING RULE
Bell Will Not
Save Fighter
All contests in New Zealand, professional and amateur, will now be fought under the rule which states that a boxer being counted out cannot be saved by the bell, except in the final round. The president of the Canterbury Boxing Association (Mr E. G. Pocock) announced this last evening when referring to the professional light-weight bout between Dion Murphy and Johnny Roberts to be held at Canterbury Court on Thursday evening The British Boxing Board of Control earlier this year introduced the rule. It will ensure that a boxer, well and truly knocked out in any round, cannot be revived during rounds and be knocked out again during the same fight, possibly suffering severe damage to his health. In the last round, a boxer may be saved by the bell, but does not have to face his opponent again. Three of the amateur preliminary bouts on Thursday evening promise to be particularly good contests. There , will be a return bout be- : tween K. Sheehan (Ashburton) and P. Riordan (Christchurch). Sheehan won a narrow points victory when ' these two light welterweights met last month.
G. Sandrey (Timaru), who proved himself a very useful welter-weight on his last appearance at Canterbury Court should meet stiff opposition from E. Bland (Christchurch), G. Bennett, the hard-hitting Christchurch light-weight, will fight P. Sheehey (Oamaru).
