CHECK ON WHEAT

Permission For Unloading (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 9. The Department of Agriculture in Auckland today carried out a careful inspection of the wheat in which a case of undeclared Australian birds was discovered in a hold of the freighter Kaimiro on. Sunday night. None of the 680 tons of wheat in the hold was unloaded while the department checked it for contamination.

Late this afternoon officers of the Animal Health Division of the department announced that the wheat appeared to be clean and that it could be unloaded provided it was cleared by tne port health officer, and used only for stock food. The clearance is likely to be given tomorrow. The 680 tons of wheat, valued at £15,000 is part of a full cargo shipped by the Australian Wheat Board from Newcastle. The shipment is 4958 tons, of which 2300 tons is destined for fowl feed and *2658 tons for milling. The birds were placed in quarantine at the Auckland Zoo. They were inspected today by the department's port veterinarian, Mr C. R. Turbet. who said they appeared to be fit and healthy. They may be allowed to remain at the zoo.
