U.S. AID TO INDONESIA
Restriction Bid Criticised (N .Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July ». The "Washington Post" today criticised an attempt to restrict severely United States aid to Indonesia. Commenting on a resolution by a Republican Congressman, Mr William Bloomfield. to end military aid to Indonesia and curtail economic assistance, the newspaper said in an editorial: “Enactment of the Bloomfield amendment would hardly encourage responsibility in either Djakarta or Congress “The woodshed may help with children. It is no place to conduct diplomacy. The practice of singling out delinquent or unpopular countries for a paddling may provide emotional relief for Congress, but it has the effect of strengthening the very obduracy that it is intended to cure.
"Moreover, the timing of Mr Bloomfield's suggested paddle-treatment could not be worse For years, the United States has hoped and awaited for a more sober attitude in Indonesia on domestic and foreign affairs. At last there are signs that the tide may be turning." it said.
