BUTTER QUOTA

Rise Being Discussed (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 8 The Prime Minister <Mr Holyoake), at his press conference today, declined to comment on. a suggestion that Britain had asked New Zealand to increase her butter quota by 10.000 tons during the current season. Mr Holyoake sand that the Government had been in frequent communication with the British Government in the last few days over butter supplies for the British market and further cables had arrived over the weekend.

The ’ Cabinet economic committee would consider the matter and there would be “a fairly early determination.” He said he expected to be able to make an announcement in a day or two. He added that officials of the New Zealand Dairy Board were being fully consulted. Mr Holyoake refused to comment on the prospect of more- cheese factories being switched to butter-making. After the announcement of the current New Zealand quota on the British butter market, three cheese factories switched to butter to enable New Zealand to fill her quota.
