MORE TIME LOST

96 Industrial Disputes

Working time lost last year because of 96 industrial stoppages was the highest in 11 years, according to an article in the May issue of the “Labour and Employment Gazette."

Working days lost totalled 93.157 —an increase of 54,972 on the previous year. “This substantial increase was, in the main, a reflection of the man-days lost in the railways and meat freezing industry, which together accounted for 76 per cent, of the working time lost.” said the article. The railways, which were free from stoppages in 1961, lost 30,920 man-days in 1962, and the meat freezing industry lost 39,962 days almost double the 1961 figure. Smaller increases were recorded in eight other industries, the most substantial of these being the fertiliser and waterfront industries, with increases of 9363 and 2481 man-days respectively. Decreases were recorded in five industries and a further seven industries in which stoppages occurred in 1961 had no disputes last year. The biggest decrease was in building and construction, where the man-days lost fell from 7696 to 1787, said the article.
