N.Z. Men In Quiz Contest
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. July 8. The New Zealand quiz experts, Jim Winchester and Bob Deamley, will begin an elimination contest on Australia's nation-wide “Pick-a-Box" television programme next week.. The contest will decide the opponent for the Australian champion, Barry Jones. The programme is described as the “world quiz championship,” and carries a prize of £lOOO for the winner. The elimination contest will take four weeks, as the television programme has only one half-hour show a week. The New Zealanders, both from Wellington, were invited to take part by the show's compere and co-producer, Bob Dyer, on a recent trip to New Zealand.
Jones beat the English champion. Dr. Reginald Webster, in an Australian television contest earlier this year. Mr Dearnley, who is aged 47, is single. He has a master i
of arts degree in mathematics, and a bachelor of science degree in physics. He is a statistician with the Department of Agriculture, a keen advocate of Esperanto, being vice-president of the New Zealand Esperanto Association.
Mr Winchester is aged 45. He married six months ago. He has a master of arts degree in history and is an advisory officer with the Department of Industries and Commerce.
He was born in London and went with his parents to New Zealand at the age <ft two. His interests Include amateur drama (back-stage), hiking and reading. Both men have participated in quiz programmes since 1943 when they competed against an Australian team over an international radio link.
They took part in the New Zealand "King of Quiz” contest, and have competed against English, South African, and Australian teams. Dyer was a close friend and radio compere rival of the late Jack Davey.
