HAAST RIVER BRIDGE
Work Virtually Completed (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. July 7. The Ministry of Works engineer at the Haast (Mr W A. Walker) has announced that vehicles are now able to cross the Haast river bridge. He said the bridge was virtually completed, and only the finishing touches remained to be done. Workmen were placing concrete kerbs at the sides and will then erect handrails.
Part of the bridging team has shifted six males further north to the Waita river, where preparatory work has begun on a 280 ft bridge.
Tenders for t>he construction of four miles of road through heavily - bushed country on the Paringa-Haast section of the Haast Pass highway, between the Whiakapothai river and Breccia creek, have been called by the Ministry of Works. At the same time, a task force from the department will be engaged with the construction of the remaining three miles of highway from the southern end. The two completed works will meet at Breccia creek.
