FIRST FOR CASHMERE
Adapted Play To Weather
In an excellent wet-weather game at Cashmere. Shirley Boys’ High School was beaten 14-6, by Cashmere High School Although it was Cashmere’s first victory, many of the finer moments of the game were Shirley’s. The decisive factor in Cashmere's favour was the superior adaptability of the players under the wet and greasy conditions. The teams were:
Shirley: j. C. Gibson; A. B McDonald, R. T. Scrivener. W F. Pullar; W. A. Robinson, B R. Gardiner (vice-captain); R G. Hair; R. J. Bell. W. H Swallow. B. W. Cox. G. J Plummer, C. F. Cochrane. D. W Cowan (captain), R. B Parlane. G. C. Gass.
Cashmere: T. Walsh; J. Pugh. W. Thomks, D. McKirdy: A. Thompson. P. Verdon (viceo«ptain). W. Thomas; A. Ryde; K. Prusas. K. McCammon, J. Trevella. S. Carlaw. A. Grant (captain). G. Gotlieb, R. McGowan. M. Foulds.
In contrast with their play of the previous Saturday, the Shirley backs attempted too much chain passing in the first" 30 minutes, and were often caught in possession. On the other hand, Verdon, for Cashmere, used probing lob-kicks to good effect One of these harried the Shirley full-back early in the game, and his clearing kick was charged down by the Cashmere wing. Pugh; the second fiveeighths, A. Thompson, snapped up the ball and scored the first try. After trailing, 6-0, Shirley gained confidence when the wing three-quarters. Pullar, scored a brilliant try after Robinson and Scrivener had carved through in an attractive movement. Th? Shirley forwards held sway early in the second spell, and a good try was scored by Cowan, after the forwards, led by Cowan and Gass, had rampaged through. The seal was placed on the game when McCammon scored a similar try for Cashmere soon after. Late in the game Thompson scored his second try for Cashmere after Thomps had intercepted, and made no mistake in a sure-footed run. This try was converted by the full-back, T Walsh, to add to his earlier penalty. There was some spirited forward play in the match, epitomised by Gass for Shirley and by Grant and Foulds for Cashmere. In the line-outs, Plummer (Shirley) and Trevella (Cashmere) battled for supremacy. but they often lacked systematic support. It was unfortunate that Shirley’s first five-eighths. Gardiner. and the Cashmere flanker, Grant, had to lejve the field injured in the second spell, after Gardiner had stopped a crushing run by Grant; both plavers played fine games. The referee was Mr L. Hunt.
