Selection For University
Sir,—Mr George Shouksmith’s article on university entrance is particularly valuable, taken with the news that the London County Council and other bodies in Britain have abandoned the H-plus examination. No technique of measurement is sufficiently accurate to be taken alone, but surely the answer is to measure first—objectively, by examination and standard psychological tests—then to reassess those more or less close to the cut off point, considering health and other variables in the light of the teacher’s personal knowledge, helped by two existing agencies: the vocational guidance and psychological services of the Education Department. The examination should be set by the university, but administered and marked by the individual school about July or August of the lower-sixth year. Those not gaining outright passes would be accredited or not on over-all assessment, depending also on their diligence and achievement for the remainder of the year.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. July 7, 1963.
