YACHTING NEW BRITISH CHALLENGER

America’s Cup Boat Named (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) . GLASGOW, July 7. Britain’s £40.000 potential 12-metre challenger for the Americas Cup was launched at Sandbank. Argyllshire, on Saturday. The new craft was named Sovereign by Mrs Valerie Boyckm, wife of Mr Arnttiony Bcvden of the Royal Thames Yacht Club.

Mr Boyden said he would be racing the yacht in trials next week against Sceptre. Britain’s last challenger for tile Americas Cup.

He said: ‘‘lf we do well against Sceptre we will build another boat.”

The reason for building another boat was to try the two against each other and then choose the better one to compete against America Sovereign, a 'graceful boat with long sweeping lines, has a copper bronze finished hull. The mast Is 85ft above her waterline. She is 6S)tt overall, has a 12fi 6in beam. 9ft draughit and displaces 27 tons. Her designer. Mr David Boyd. said there were material differences between Sovereign and Sceptre. He said the lower pert of the keel and the rudder were completely unconventional in shape. and unlike Sceptre, shi had transom stern and sharper bows.
