MAN BURNT TO DEATH

Trapped In Car (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 7. A young Ranfurly man was burned to death when his car hit a bank, capsized, and burst into flame near Ranfurly in the early hours of this morning. Police are withholding the man’s name until relatives have been informed.

The car. travelling towards Becks, on the RanfurlyAlexandra highway, is thought to have skidded on a steep incline, hit the bank, and rolled at least once.

A motorist travelling from Alexandra saw the flames and stopped to assist. He heard scratching sounds inside the car and broke the windscreen. A dog leapt through the hole and ran off into the darkness and has not been seen since.

Intense heat prevented the motorist from opening the door of the tar where the driver was trapped. The car, a 1954 Renault, was a total loss.
